Where to Watch The Gemini Boat Race 2022
The Boat Race course, known as the Championship Course, between Putney and Mortlake has been home to the Men’s Boat Race since 1845 and The Women’s Boat Race since 2015.
The timing for the races is dictated by the tides which explains why there are such precise start times for each race. The crews race against the stream but with the flow of the incoming tide known as the ‘flood tide’. The Women’s Boat Race starts two and a half hours before the ‘flood tide’ and the Men’s Boat Race one and a half hours before.
It’s our first time back in London in two years and we look forward to welcoming you to The Gemini Boat Race 2022. This free to watch event has a long tradition as a wonderful British Spring sporting occasion that can be enjoyed by the whole family. There are plenty of great vantage points to see all the action, enjoy the big screens in our Fan Parks at Bishops Park and Furnivall Gardens, or take in the views from a riverside pub.
Earlier in the day, between 1130 and 1330, you can also enjoy the Festival of Rowing led by the Royal Row Barge Gloriana. You can find more information about the Festival of Rowing here.
When you are out watching the race, hopefully in the sunshine, please do remember that the River Thames is a strong and powerful river and the conditions change very quickly with the tide. Before the races begin the ride will be out and there will be shingle areas which may look like good places to watch the event from but these areas will cover in water very quickly when the tide turns so do not walk onto the river side ‘beach’! On the day we are supported by our official Charity Partner, the RNLI who provide safety support to the Boat Race and to all our spectators. Please play your part in keeping safe by respecting the river.
