FINAL THOUGHTS

Charlie Marcus

CUBC Men’s President

I am excited to face Oxford on the 3rd of April 2022 for the first Boat Race in three years to be on the Championship Course. The Boat Race is returning home and we are ready for it.

I am proud of the work and commitment that has been put in by my teammates. The quality of training has been high from day one and perhaps more importantly, a strong team culture has been driven from everyone -regardless of squad ranking. Our collective goal of winning the Boat Race brought us together and whilst there will be only nine of us in the Blue Boat, it will have been a whole squad effort to reach the start line. There has obviously been a lot of internal competition throughout the season, especially during the selection period, but the success of the team has always been put ahead of our own individual ambitions.

We have been lucky to have an excellent coaching team this year. The addition of Bill Lucas to our coaching team and the partnership he has formed with returning Chief Coach Rob Baker has been hugely valuable. As a squad we have fully bought in to our training program and have reaped the rewards both physiologically on the ergo, and in the units that we have formed on the water.

We knew from the start of the season that we had all the tools to build some very strong Boat Race crews. There have been obstacles along the way but by taking the season week-by-week we have made incremental gains which has led us to produce high quality Blue Boat and Goldie line-ups that I have every confidence will deliver their best performance on the day.
