Each year has its own unique feel and this one has been historic for the club. It’s been my absolute privilege to lead the OUBC Men’s team.

We have an amazing spread of experience levels and backgrounds across the team, and watching the guys forge friendships, which I suspect will endure far beyond this season, has been fantastic. It’s a group of wholeheartedly committed guys who have put everything into their sport and the pursuit of victory.

The season has not been without challenges. The bad weather has seen our home stretch flooded for large parts of the season, and we’ve had to be uniquely adaptable. What fills me with confidence is that the team have not swayed in the face of this disruption, instead everyone is even hungrier to develop. We’re taking every opportunity with both hands, and everyone embodies the principle of building something greater than the sum of its parts. Our world-class coaching team of Sean Bowden and Brendan Gliddon are core to this, shaping each of us as athletes, as well as building our whole team as a collective.

There is nothing quite like the Boat Race. Victory is absolute, defeat is total. It is a privilege to train and compete at the level we do, against a truly challenging opposition, and add to the long and storied history of the contest.

Only nine people will race in each boat but they are supported not just by the whole team, but by 195 years of the OUBC who have gone before them. I’m looking forward to putting our best foot forward on the March 30th.
